Life Loves Laughter

Published - 2024

I hope this book brings a smile to the reader. In some parts, it may shock because we have become too wary of opening up. We forget what a balm humour can be and we refuse to accept our vulnerabilities, becoming upset if anyone criticises us or laughs at us. I learnt to play the clown sometimes so that others could feel less vulnerable, putting myself in the firing line of their derision. My father taught me that being seen as vulnerable people would usually confide in the knowledge that you do not pre-judge them.

A bit about the book

This is a story of the more amusing elements of my life and is written in an effort to restore some humour into the lives of those who read it.

My life was relatively unusual. I was lucky. I had wonderful parents. I grew up abroad. I was blessed with a sense of adventure which created a backdrop for amusing things to happen.

I loved to explore which provided scope for mini disasters and mistakes so it required humour to get through some of them.

As I wrote without effort, I realised just how much we are losing the capacity to laugh at ourselves. We have become risk-averse and are unable to poke fun at ourselves although we are all too ready to sneer at others.

We seem to avoid the truth if it is too awkward instead of embracing it and being able to laugh our way out of embarrassing moments.

And finally, writing the book makes me realise just how important everyone and everything is that we encounter, every second of our time on this planet. We should take nothing for granted and we should be aware of the impact every single person and thing has on our every moment. It is all of this that makes us how we are and enables us to grow, along with all the decisions we make.

I remain hugely grateful to everyone I ever met, even if I never spoke to them. Every single thing that I ever saw or heard, every smell, everything in fact made contact with me each day in some way. All of this had an impact on me and shaped my life and who I became and am still becoming.

It may not appeal to everyone but it will appeal to some, so I wish them well on their travels through their lives.
