ACIDOSIS AND ITS DIRECT LINK TO FAST FOOD (ULRA PROCESSED FOODS)

Fast Food is high in protein with meat and cheese and eggs to the fore. Animal protein contributes to acidosis because its sulphur contains amino acids, methionine and cysteine produce sulphuric acid which increase hydrogen ions which lead to a net-acid load and low grade metabolic acidosis. The extra cellular acidosis activates NLRP3 inflammation in human macrophages which leads tot he secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin – 1beta and gamma thus acidosis contributes tot he vicious cycle of inflammation associated with diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and atherosclerosis.

To counter this the body  leaches calcium from bones along with magnesium and phosphorous which can lead to osteoporoisis. And in order to rebalance the pH in the body it seeks alkalinity which is available from fruits and vegetables which are high in organic anions like citrate, maleate and glauconite which is converted onto carbonate which neutralises the acid.

The harmful effects acidosis are type 2 diabetes, an increase in gluconeogenesis, hypertension, bone loss, osteoporosis, muscle loss and strength, connective tissue loss, fibromyalgia, gout, kidney stones, a loss of  salt, potassium calcium, magnesium and phosphate plus an inflammatory condition.

An article in the BMJ – open heart editorial -Low grade metabolic acidosis as a driver of chronic disease, a 21st century public health crisis.  J>J>DiNicolantonio et al. States…..A greater emphasis on low grade metabolic acidosis should be provided during medical school so that clinicians are more aware of this condition and how to treat it.

All this information is covered in FAST FOOD SLOW DEATH in chapters covering Krebs Cycle and The Sodium Pump. And is a must read for all students of health and nutrition.
