Stress and the Student

According to an anonymous journalist in the Sunday Times – 6 Oct – it has become almost impossible to lecture at Universities due to the scandalous number of students who report that they are just TOO STRESSED to study. Burnout. ADHD. Depression. Extreme anxiety – all self diagnosed. Sometimes 20 out of a class fo 30 fail to attend lectures and the lecturer is now responsible for their wellbeing on top of their teaching.  Students have become customers they can’t afford to upset. Now they own the Universités. They expect a degree as a service and stressed students are seen as ‘exceptional circumstances’ and are given a degree regardless. The obvious reason lies in the notion that University is essential which of course it is not and many students are just not capable of studying at the level required. The author of the article ends by saying he wishes students were attending seminars hungover and faking sickness after late-night partying rather than avoiding attendance on the trumped up excuse of ‘mental illness.’  We are a sick nation and some students seem to be the part of the sickness.
