Our government is considering extending the smoking ban to parks, outside pubs and football grounds – anywhere public. OK. OK that’s great for non smokers but if the same zealousness was applied to fast food outlets and the imposition of higher taxes on sugar and salt and an overall reduction of fast foods it might begin to reduce the staggering costs to the NHS due to obesity, general ill health, mental and physical and disability. The original smoking restrictions were massively unpopular and the sugar and salt tax will be too. But it has to be done. There’s no soft option.
